How big is your market and how have you tested it?
As my Uncle Bob used to say, "You can't bullshit a bullshitter." Investors are smart and have been through a thousand meetings like the one you're hoping to have. Show up with verified data and know the details of your marketplace. Make sure the message is brief, accurate and impressive.
Sell the benefit of your product in 5 seconds
What does it do and why would someone want to buy it? If it takes more than one slide to convey this message you're probably saying too much.
Help the investor understand their upside
Nobody is investing in your company just for the fun of it. How much money will they make and when? Remember--you're pitching to investors!
Make your financial projections easy to read
How long until you are generating revenue?
What are the steps and costs to get from today to your first transaction? Pitch decks that articulate this answer many questions in a single slide.
Know your numbers!
Every chart tells a story and you better be able to explain every curve, dip and spike with an instant (and accurate) answer. Investors are smart and know when revenue doesn't look right.
Justify your staffing with key performance indicators
Small markets are unexciting
Make sure the size of your market is clear--from every angle and from every potential customer touch point. Investors like BIG.
What are the most important stats?
You won't need more than one slide to drive home the core reasons for your business idea. What problem are you solving, and how big is it?
Sometimes a lot of text is important
If your deck is being circulated more as an executive overview then don't be afraid to fill a few slides with meaningful content. Bullets work but get boring after 3 or 4 slides and investors will stop focusing on the content unless you break up the format.
Don't over expose your MVP or product
Keep it in context with a pitch. Save the demo for later and focus on why your technology solves a problem and creates unique benefits for users.
These stats are real.
Your pitch needs to be sharp, fast and clear. And even though the average deck is 19 pages (including appendix slides for a deep dive discussion)--say it in 12 or less to make sure that you have time to hit all of the high notes. Let's get started!
